What mDNSRadar does

mDNSRadar shows the devices and services on your local network that announce themselves with Bonjour (mDNS/DNS-SD), such as AirPlay speakers, printers, file servers, smart home accessories and other Macs. You can browse them by device or by service type, inspect their addresses, TXT entries and raw DNS records, filter the lists, and pause scanning to study a snapshot.

mDNSRadar requires macOS 27 or later.

Getting started

On first launch, macOS asks whether mDNSRadar may find and connect to devices on your local network. Choose Allow. Without this permission the app cannot see any Bonjour announcements.

Turning the permission back on

Open System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Local Network and switch on mDNSRadar. Then quit and reopen the app.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't I see a device I know is on my network?

Bonjour only works within one network segment. Devices behind a different router, in another VLAN or on a guest network are usually invisible unless your network forwards mDNS. Some devices also only advertise their services while they are awake or in pairing mode.

Why are some devices dimmed?

A dimmed device or service has stopped announcing itself. It stays in the list, labelled with when it was last seen, until the removal timeout has passed. You can change the timeout in mDNSRadar ▸ Settings. The item you have selected is never removed while it is selected.

Why do some names look like random letters and numbers?

Many devices, for example Matter and Thread accessories, use generated identifiers as their Bonjour names. mDNSRadar shows the names exactly as the devices announce them.

What does pausing do?

Pausing stops all network discovery and freezes what has been found so far. Nothing expires while paused, and you can still filter, select and copy. When you resume, mDNSRadar scans again and updates the list after a few seconds.

Does mDNSRadar send my data anywhere?

No. It only listens to Bonjour on your local network and keeps what it finds in memory until you quit. See the privacy policy.
